Truth - I've never been a fan of the "New Year, New You" slogan. I mentally cringe at each website or social media entrepreneur using it to market. The thing is
there are a lot of things that I like about me and I'm sure the same goes for you. But, if that isn't true, you don't need to be buying into every pyramid scheme and quick fix that promises a new you. You need to do some self reflecting and make an action plan for how you can like yourself. That's another blog post, though.
I do believe in fresh, clean starts. New beginnings. Improvements. Constant growth to create the best version of you. I also believe that skin is an essential element to your overall health.
Somehow, along the way of human growth, self care became a thing of the past. Our society does not make health maintenance easy. Between work and home obligations, regular care has become a luxury that many cannot afford. We visit the doctor when we're ill, the chiropractor when we're hurting, and our dermatologist when our skin is unbearable.
If your skin is dry, you apply lotion. If you have cystic acne, you seek medication. If you have a sunburn or itchy rash, you apply ointment. What do you do to make sure that your skin is healthy? Really, why does our skin health even matter?
Proper skin care helps to keep our outermost surface layer of skin intact. This layer maintains skin's overall hydration and serves as our primary defense against the environment, so keeping it strong and healthy is critical. Harsh cleansers, for example, can damage the outer layer by stripping essential lipids and moisture. Using a proper skin care regimen daily can help preserve this important protective layer. -Dr. Oz
Skin is your body's largest organ. Not only does it play a vital role in protecting your body by keeping you from getting sick or having damage to your bones, muscles, and internal organs, it maintains your body temperature. Your skin also makes Vitamin D when the sun shines on it which is important for the health of your bones and other parts of your body.
What happens when you don't take care of your skin? Too much sun damage can increase your risk for skin cancer. You skin can look old years too soon. You will also be less able to fight off infection.
If you're looking for a new year resolution, start with the biggest organ -- your skin! Vow to use SPF every. single. day. That simple start will immediately improve your skin's health. Look into healthier skin care options. Natural soaps and skin care lines can nourish your skin without feeding it unnecessary chemicals and preservatives. Finally, find an esthetician that you trust and build a relationship. Finding someone that knows your skin and its cycle, who can identify irregularities, and battle skin concerns, is so valuable to skin health.
Here's to you in 2018! New year, new skin!!
